What was it like?
It’s a question often asked of elders that lead to many entertaining, profound, and meaningful stories from the past. And now, What Was It Like? is a new program by I’m From Driftwood that collects, shares, and preserves stories by LGBTQ elders. More than any other generation, LGBTQ elders have been asked to keep their stories in the dark. Now, I’m From Driftwood is putting them into the spotlight where they belong.
Far too many LGBTQ stories have been lost to the closet, to the AIDS epidemic, and to time itself. What Was It Like? gives LGBTQ elders a way to pass their legacy on to future generations, and allow LGBTQ youth to gain a valuable, first hand perspective on the LGBTQ experience and history.
I’m From Driftwood is working with SAGE — the largest national nonprofit dedicated to LGBTQ elders — to find storytellers. And Comcast — the largest cable provider in the country — is ensuring the stories will be seen by people all across the country.
Each What Was It Like? story will premiere exclusively on Comcast’s XFINITY network and On Demand, delivering the stories to televisions and computer screens inside the homes of millions of Comcast customers, from America’s smallest towns to its biggest cities. The stories will later be shared right here on I’m From Driftwood’s website, YouTube channel, and social media platforms.
All the footage and stories that are collected will be preserved and archived in perpetuity at the Fales Library at NYU.
Stories that are professionally produced, shared in millions of homes, and preserved for all time. That’s the program the LGBTQ community has deserved for generations and now, with I’m From Driftwood’s What Was It Like?, it exists.
