“I’m Sorry To Disappoint You, Mom.”

by Mary

This week on I’m From Driftwood, we’re sharing stories we collected from a PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) group in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mary, like most moms, was wondering where her son was going at night and what he was up to. After inquiring, she got her answer.

I said, “Brian, I know you go down to these bars, and…where are you going with your life?” He said, “You have a right to wonder what’s going on.” And he never said that night that he was gay, he said, “I’m so sorry to disappoint you, Mom.” And that just is forever seared in my mind.

After struggling with her son’s sexuality at first, Mary educated herself about the LGBTQ community. Her focus soon was on her son and her son’s partner, their relationship, and then gloats about her son’s marriage and wedding.

I am so grateful that Brian is now part of this other family that is so open and accepting and they have a blast.
