This week on I’m From Driftwood, we’re sharing stories we collected from a PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) group in Omaha, Nebraska.

Joni and her spouse had three boys–or so they thought.
My spouse and I had three kiddos and we thought we had three boys until our middle child started talking about having a girl heart, brain, and soul. She was about 4 and a half when she first said it.
Joni was accepting of her transgender daughter but struggled with not knowing how to comfort her.
I felt as a parent very helpless to make that better and that’s what we’re supposed to do as parents is make it better. And that’s oftentimes how she would explain it, she would say, “Every night when I go to bed I pray to God that when I wake up my outside will match my inside, and it doesn’t happen. How long does it take for dreams to come true?”
