´Why are you home?” she asked.

“I need to talk to you.”

And then came the tears.

“You´re gay” she said. I confirmed her thoughts. We sat by the fireplace talking about what had taken place over the preceding months. The marriage counseling, the distance, the knowledge that something was taking place.

Our two sons were quite young and we talked about how to deal with them. Where do we go? What do we do? What do we say? The answers came in time. I called the family and explained specifically the circumstances. With one exception all were supportive. My father and I only talked when his mother died in 2003 and upon the death of my eldest son 6 years later.

My wife and I remain on good terms 34 years after marrying and 20 years after it all fell apart. Where did we go and what did we do? We accepted life and moved forward. What did we say? We spoke the truth. And our children grew up knowing that they were loved and our grandkids know exactly who we are. What more can we ask for?
